The challenge
A pipeline construction cost and time estimator had been developed in Excel by a subject-matter expert with deep knowledge of the forecasting methodology. With more than a thousand inputs, the workbook was difficult to maintain and needed a more manageable workflow for data entry and reuse across projects.
My contribution
I brought technical expertise and operational experience to rebuild the Excel/VBA tool from scratch around a template-driven workflow, translating the existing domain methodology into a reusable application.
The approach
I restructured the inputs into a standardized master set designed for easier maintenance and use. Project-specific criteria could be imported into the workflow, allowing the tool to generate scenarios and support different projects using a common template and input structure.
Results
The rebuilt application simplified data entry, improved data quality, and reduced maintenance effort. Its reusable templates and standardized inputs made it easier to produce scenarios for multiple projects.
