Making energy planning scenarios easier to explore

Integrated engineers' modelling data into an interactive Power BI reporting model, simplifying exploration of energy scenarios and demonstration of different energy mixes to stakeholders.

Engagement durationApproximately 9 monthsCovers the wider role; the individual project duration is not separately recorded.

The challenge

Engineers were modelling planned energy demand and scenarios involving different mixes of solar, wind, gas, and hydrogen. Their Excel-based process required manual work to investigate the data and present alternatives. They wanted interactive reporting that made scenarios and their associated variables easier to explore.

My contribution

I integrated the engineers' modelling data and supporting variables into a structured data model designed for interactive querying and filtering in Power BI. This provided an analytical and reporting layer over their engineering models.

The approach

Power Query workflows brought source files into a common reporting model. Engineers could explore the supplied scenario data through Power BI filters and queries. Updating the analysis involved replacing files in the source folders and refreshing the data pipeline, after which reports reflected the latest supplied data.

Results

The solution substantially simplified investigative analysis and made it easier to demonstrate energy scenarios to other stakeholders. A reusable data model and refresh process reduced the manual work involved in preparing data for reporting and exploring alternatives.
