Establishing a shared analytics service for container terminals

Helped establish the company's first in-house terminal analytics service, with a data model designed for varied operating systems. The initial rollout reached two terminals and informed broader executive reporting.

The challenge

Terminals managed their own data, reporting, and analytics independently. Different brands and versions of terminal operating systems created a complex environment for a shared service. A central team was formed to establish the company's first in-house terminal reporting and analytics capability.

My contribution

I contributed business analysis, project management, data modelling, integration design, and hands-on report development. I worked with terminal stakeholders and technical teams to define reporting needs and coordinate implementation.

The approach

Our team developed a shared reporting and analytics service with a data model and schema designed to accommodate different terminal operating systems and versions. The work combined data integration, a data warehouse, and reporting on terminal operations, including vessel productivity, container movements, dwell time, and equipment utilization.

Results

The service was rolled out to two terminals. The data modelling and operational knowledge developed through the work also informed a CFO-sponsored executive performance dashboard and a roadmap for extending reporting further into the terminal network.
