The challenge
A network operations team relied on manually collated CSV exports and repeated dataset rebuilding to produce reporting. The process used only part of the available source data, limiting analysis and management visibility into network usage and return-to-office patterns.
My contribution
I built an automated reporting workflow using SharePoint folders, Power BI dataflows, and Power BI reports. I reused the useful visual design from an earlier report while replacing its manual data preparation and expanding the information available for analysis.
The approach
The pipeline consolidated network and VPN export files and used more of their available fields. Integrating organizational identity and lookup data enabled analysis by government team, individual building, and locations within buildings. Interactive reporting let users examine patterns in greater detail. As the historical dataset grew, I improved processing efficiency by retaining earlier processed data and processing only more recent files.
Implementation
Early demonstrations helped refine requirements and establish a new reporting process. Management-facing reporting was available within approximately two weeks, and the solution was fully in use within four weeks. I trained a team member to manage the reporting environment and documented a roadmap for later migration to a database-backed architecture.
Results
The team gained broader, higher-quality, more interactive data for operational and management decisions. Building, location, and team breakdowns enabled more direct feedback about return-to-office impacts and shortcomings. Automated integration replaced repeated manual file collation and dataset rebuilding, providing a reusable foundation for further reporting.
