Restoring a failing contact-centre data pipeline

Investigated a critical ETL failure and coordinated database and vendor specialists to restore a job from hours and repeated failures to approximately five minutes.

The challenge

In a high-volume contact-centre BI environment, an ETL job involving joins and updates across tens of millions of records deteriorated from minutes to hours, then began failing and crashing the server.

My contribution

As the business-side owner responsible for BI performance monitoring and escalation, I investigated server and ETL logs, isolated the failing job, and engaged the database support team and software vendor.

Resolution

During a joint troubleshooting session, a senior database administrator identified the need for a multi-column index. After the fix was implemented, the job returned to approximately five minutes, down from one to three hours and repeated failures.

Results

The fix restored the affected processing job. It was shared with the vendor and subsequently incorporated across its customer base. My contribution was problem identification, investigation, escalation, and coordination of the resolution.
