Wholesale and distribution / Data-warehouse development

Making existing reporting requirements searchable for data-warehouse development

Automated the documentation of hundreds of Crystal Reports, giving analysts and developers a searchable view of fields, tables, and SQL dependencies to support data-warehouse development.

The challenge

A data-warehouse development team needed to understand the data and reporting requirements embedded in a large collection of existing Crystal Reports. Inspecting reports individually would require repeated manual work to identify fields, tables, parameters, and SQL dependencies.

My contribution

I created an automated documentation and search solution using Access, VBA, SQL Server, SQL scripts, and supporting third-party software. It extracted reporting metadata from hundreds of reports and made the resulting information searchable.

Results

Analysts and developers could search across reports to identify where fields and tables were used and understand existing reporting requirements without opening each report manually. The tool supported data-warehouse development by making the existing reporting estate easier to investigate.
